…Davis and Torres Nez have discussed the possibility of including inmate artwork at future markets, but this year, one notable prisoner presents his art at the venue: Native activist Leonard Peltier, who is serving two consecutive life sentences in a high-security prison in Florida for the murder of two F.B.I. agents in 1975. Torres Nez periodically writes letters to members of the Obama administration seeking clemency for Peltier, who is represented at IFAM by his son, Chauncey. “He sent in his application from prison. He heard about it, read about it, decided to apply, and went through the jurying process. We have a group of artists who go through all the images and talk about the art. His work was well-done, so we said, ‘Why not?’ Usually, you have to be there to represent your work, but we all agreed it was worth an exception to let Chauncey represent him.”
